Today I ride the Internet!

Yes indeed, today is the day I try to update the site and make it so that it works better with the new update schedule and format.

Yesterday I spent most of my time trying to figure out Comicpress, but as it turns out when I upgraded it I found out that the new version (2.9) is really friendly when it comes to customization. It’s almost as if the people that make it realized that nobody wants to leave it looking as it comes. The earlier one, on the other hand… well… not so much.

In any case, the site will probably be very unstable today, look like crap one second, not work the next, display database errors half the time and finally look like something that might work. Then I’ll finally go into meltdown mode and bug my friend Vlad through constant IMs until he fixes it, all the time making comments about how it’s really not all that complicated.

Hopefully I’ll be done by noon.

This is a print design I just finished for a NINJA T-Shirt we’ll be selling over at Swag Shark!

The idea is for the fighting ninja to go all around the bottom part of the shirt (front and back), and the logo on the far left will be placed… erm… somewhere.

I’ll let you all know when it’s available for pre-order!

Style comparison: Thick outlines or thin?

by O on July 31, 2010 at 11:09 pm

Decisions, decisions, decisions! One aspect I didn’t quite anticipate regarding this whole issue of “taking a week to produce the comic” is that I also have a whole week to fuss about it. I suppose that as I get used to it it will become easier and feel a lot more natural, but for now this new work rhythm feels really weird.

In any case, I’m still making up my mind regarding the way certain parts of the comic will look, and for the “real life” parts I have these two possibilities:

This first possibility gets rid of the thick outlines and in some parts of the image gets rid of the outline entirely. This generates a more “realistic” feel to the colors and helps emphasize the volumes and lighting scheme.

This second one has exactly the same coloring as the one before, but it keeps the lines darker and the outer lines thick. The coloring becomes a lot flatter this way, but it enhances the cartoon feel of the image making it appear to be more dynamic.

In all honesty, I have absolutely no preference for one or the other and I consider myself “undecided” at the moment. So, which one do you think works better?

A color preview

I’m hard at work producing next week’s comic, and since the coloring is definitely more complex I wanted to share a little sneak preview of one of the panels from the “real life” parts of it. Don’t worry though, there will still be a clear distinction between what’s going on at the gaming table and what’s going on in the game.

So, yeah… a preview!
