Environment: Any underground
on February 19th, 2010
As I was planning today’s comic I was thinking about how Perky would tell the characters that Fiddlebutt the Gnome lived underground… nothing special. I was considering the possibility of having Weretiger make some comment and be surprised with it – or annoyed; I wasn’t really sure. But then I remembered that I had already drawn Gnomes in the comic before, so the wasn’t really any good reason for Weretiger to be surprised.
That got me thinking of another time I drew stuff happening underground, and I remembered the time the group was caught by a clan of sexy Drow Elves. Then there was that other time they fell into a sewer tunnel after some town’s floor collapsed. I guess underground settings are just common in fantasy stories. And that got me thinking about all the stuff that supposedly lives underground in a fantasy setting and how small, cramped and tight I’ve always imagined those places to be.
And that’s how today’s comic came to be. I got home, opened my Pathfinder Bestiary and looked up all the creatures that had their environment listed as “underground”. The races you’ll find in that last panel are: Choker, Dark Creeper, Derro, Drider, Drow, Duegar, Gnome, Half-dragon, Half-fiend, Kobold, Minotaur, Mite, Morlock, Naga, Orc, Purple Worm (sort of), Svirfneblin, Troglodyte, Vegepygmy and finally our beloved PC: the Dwarf. Their appearances are based on the way they’re shown in the book, so I look to think of it as some sort of homage to the publication’s artwork.
I also made the image into a wallpaper. As before, you can find out what display fits your screen by checking out this chart.

3×2, 4×3, 5×3, 5×4, 8×5, 16×9, 17×9, i-stuff
Anyway, I hope you like it – it was fun to draw.
Good hunting;
O

there’s plenty of room down there… why complain?
looking great, have a nice weekend!
Great las pannel.
I´ve found the ninjas.
Totally worth the wait. I’d seriously consider the last panel on a rust-colored t-shirt.
So, must be some troubles when someone farts
Love the comic, always do. I think the script in the last panel is what would make this an awesome wallpaper though. In any case, thanks for considering us, your fans, and so often putting wallpapers up.
I LOVE the wallpapers!
i THINK I can identify all of them… but which is the choker?
also: is that the shady guy from the tavern i see?
I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve taken the liberty of cutting those text bubbles out of your comic and pasted them unto my copy of your desktop picture. It just adds so much to that picture.
Thanks.
Wow you really go out with your web comics. I hope I can reach that status. I have the wallpaper on my iphone and my computer.
Hollow Earth!
Oh I can just imagine all those hairy dirty bodies sweating together. What a great breeding ground for new life forms.
Speaking of Pathfinder, what do you think?
And nice comic as usual O.
You forgot to list the underground race of ninja!
Damn, I just can’t find the second ninja… only the one left lower bottom of the last panel… that’s the first time!
Ah, O, since your currently in the progress of getting better at coloring: I’ve got to say, you’ve made som tremendous progress! The comic looks very good now
(not that it didn’t before, but your coloring really just gives it the last touch and makes it look so much more professional)
And the many perspectives that you’re using at the moment really make the comic come to life
Hey O!
That first panel just got me thinking: You really need to get into drawing a fantasy comic book. Serious? Comedic? I don’t know. That’s up to you. I’d buy it anyhow.
@Butterfly
Second ninja is just behind Dwarf’s head. Took me a while too
The thing about the underground is that one can always dig deeper. Unless the world is flat…and you kinda fall out on the other side. That would be awkward.
@Julien Brightside
That would be so like Pratchett’s Discworld.
Thanks for the wallpaper 0! as always I love your work and the comic!
I can never stop looking at the comic until I find the ninjas
@Matt: Thanks! Well, that one is really well hidden!
Awesome last panel. Didn’t even need to ask for it to become a wallpaper. Underground settings in campaigns often annoy me, especially when they r the stereotypical ones that are so often used you can almost guess the layout. But if you think about it, it makes sense to have alot of creatures originate from underground because it’s unspecific and dark. Oh and there’s a good amount of snack food if your near a gnome city.
