Blowing the Horns of Trannis (A.K.A. The difficulties of fantasy naming)
on February 8th, 2010
One of the things that has given me the most laughs in almost any fantasy setting is the set of names created for the different characters involved. I firmly believe that movies such as Eragon would’ve been a bit less stupid if the names themselves were – perhaps – a bit less stupid. Watching many of the movies set in the fantasy genre, it would seem that the rules for naming go a bit in the direction of simply adding “or”, “ion” or something similar to the end of a random set of syllables. One neat trick seems to be grabbing anything from the languages that sound most ancient (like greek, latin or sometimes even asian languages) and then adding the epic-enhancing endings. An “x” also does the trick quite nicely. Just take a minute and look at some of the names in these movies, names like Damodar, Galbatorix, Ormaline or Profion. They all sound like medicine.
Then, of course, you get the characters that get regular names. You’ve got a bunch of barbarians with all their names ending in “AR”, “OR” and “OTH” and then there’s a guy named William or whatever. I’d suppose that the chances of a guy being named Bill or something regular-sounding like that during the middle ages are much greater than being named something like “Shaggmor the Unquenchable”, but after a whole series of clichéd fantasy names the regular names just sound out of place.
And then let’s not forget the guys that get comic relief names, which are frequently named after things, small animals or whatever the writer thought of first. Take the Dungeons & Dragons movie, for instance (a movie that clearly fits into the category of “I can’t believe they ruined this opportunity to make something cool”). You’ve got a whole set of characters with corny fantasy names, plus the guys with regular names and then you got a guy named “Snails”. Better yet, he’s played by Marlon Wayans (and you’d think they would’ve learned their lesson not to cast him in anything other than a horrible comedy – but then some moron decided he’d make a good G.I.Joe).
So you’ve got all these horrible fantasy names that I just love to complain about. But then we go and play our RPG campaigns or our MMOs and we get to name our own characters – and we do an even worse job. My personal pet peeve in those situations is people that use already existing names from their favorite stories – but modified. Names like “Gandolf” or “Druzzt” or “Pillow”.
And what about me? Ever since I discovered the names Sauron and Darth Vader I have had to deal with the very real possibility that no other name will ever sound more bad-ass than those two. So I don’t even try. I use names like Belinga, Shadowschlong and Hoochie-Momma (the Caribbean voodoo priestess), and would much rather appear as if I’m intentionally trying to make them sound funny than actually attempt to give them cool names and accidentally end up with something funny-sounding.
So let’s start the week with something interesting in the comments: what’s the worst name in fantasy? It has to be from mainstream fantasy, not something you invented or saw over some WOW player’s head.
Good hunting;
O
NOTE: I actually think Madmartigan was a cool name, though. Somebody should name their kid like that.

Update on Arawn the Cat’s health:
I was allowed to bring Arawn home for the weekend and… well… it was a rough weekend. He barely moves, he can barely breathe and he’s definitely not eating. A while ago I had to rescue him because he had gone to get a drink and he just let himself collapse there with half his face in the water. The veterinarian had told me that Arawn was not going to be getting any better and that all I could do was just try to help him live his final days as well as possible – but I simply don’t see it happening. I tried giving him his medicine a bit earlier and it felt like I was killing him. I was considering taking him away to the vet’s right now, but he’s just so miserable there that I couldn’t force myself to making him spend the night there again. Nevertheless, I’m afraid to leave him here until tomorrow when I leave for the classes I have to teach at the university, so I’m going to let him sleep here tonight and take him to the veterinarian before going to work.
If there’s any possibility of him getting better, then I’ll go for it. But if this is as good as it’s gonna get, I think it would be better to just let the poor cat rest.
I’d like to thank all the people that sent me kind words of support and condolences. I realize that to many people Arawn is “just a cat”, but to me he had become something more like a best friend. I really do love that big black feline and that means that if I can’t make him better, I should at least be strong enough to not let it become worse.
Again, thank you everybody for your support. It means a lot to me. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

I think you added an extra line-thingie to the speech bubble that says “You’re not exactly setting the standard very high.” Not a big problem, it just confused me for a second since it looked like O and Batey(I think I have his name right…) were saying the same thing.
Oh wait, that was actually Carlos saying that, if I do indeed have their names right. >___>
I’ve taken to using the name “Anleifr” in RPGs, LARPS, and occasionally in real life.
Also, I hope your cat gets better…
Fixed. Thanks for the head’s up.
Nice… ninja owl… lol!
Many of the names of miscellaneous characters spring to mind, although I can’t remember what any of them are (you know, the names mentioned throughout the book but which aren’t actual characters and don’t serve any other purpose.)
Buen comic. Muy apreciado sobre todo considerando el problema con Arwen, es una lástima que no te hayan dicho que tiene el gato. Espero que logre pasar bien dentro de lo posible.
O, I passed through something similar several years ago with my beloved dog Shanti, she had cancer and passed away about a month after I left her at my parent’s house, It just sucks. I know what you are going through and all I can say is I’m sorry it happened to Arawn
In my gaming group, we have a tendency to get on our GM’s case about naming on more that just the NPCs. It’s not so much that they sometimes come up with less than creative names, but that they don’t always remember the names from one session to the next. It got so bad that when we got on one’s case, he yelled “Durn you!” at us, and the name stuck for a city, forever to be known as Durnyu. Our group is insane, and there are many more stories, but I’ll leave them for later and not take up too much more space.
As for Arawn, it’s always difficult to let a pet go. My folks had to put our border collie down a few years ago and I was there for when they did the injection. I had grown up with that dog for almost 16 years and it was hard to see him go, but he had been having major health issues for a while. I wish you the best and we all know you will do what is best for you and Arawn when the time comes.
this smells like “darko” storyline too much… i hope im mistaken…
Wow… Erm… That horn is… well… Impressive!
I wish to have a horn that big some day!
On the subject of Eragon… you should try the book, it’s nothing special, but it’s worlds better than the movie. The movie is just a complete pile of shit, they turned the story around 180° at some points, it doesn’t even make sense. My brother and I watched it together in the cinema and we both knew the book beforehand. It was a nice coincidence that we were the only wants wanting to see the movie – because we just couldn’t stop laughing, I think that would’ve been quite annoying for other people. But it’s just ridiciolous what they did to the story.
In response to the competition, I’d say Farmer, would be the most stupid name, but that’s just cause his reason for naming himself that, resulted in us naming him several different things during the movie, ending with king King, cause that’s what he does.
But that’s from an Uwe Boll film, so I don’t know if it counts.
My sympathies with you and Arawn.
Guess what, ages ago I decided to write the best fantasy ever, and named the main character Alcator. That’s Alcat-OR , mind you!
That’s why I am always afraid to tell my players the actual names of the characters. When I do tell them, they simply decide to rename them. One of the characters who had an overly long name (and quite a lame one at that, I’ll confess) is now known as “Bob”. And a situation very similar to what you depict in this strip happened recently, with the same sexual innuendo found in an otherwise perfectly innocent name, and the character also had a compound second name which was seen in a whole new light after that… It would be hard to explain what the puns were because we’re French, and thus the puns were also in French, but let’s just say, you’re not alone, O.
About the D&D movie, consider that, in french, “fion” is a slangy word that means “ass”. Well, it makes the name Profion sound even more ridiculous…
Sorry about Arawn. It’s not easy letting a pet go, but seeing them in pain is probably a lot worse.
If you want a funny name, I made a rogue, who’s an ex prostitute, for an upcoming D&D 3.5 game called Youngtease Lazycoin.
Notice that Al’s not saying much just got that “I found something funny but it’s inappropriate to laugh” sort of grin.
I used a Halfling Name Generator and modified it a bit. The DM certainly approves by the massive grin on his face when he thinks about it.
Worst name in fantasy? I’ll go with Pug… its a truly ridiculous name for a whoop ass sorcerer =)
Also, i feel sorry for poor Arawn, i guess it would be better to let him rest than suffer.. I know i couldnt bear watching my cats slowly dying in front of me, feeling helpless to do anything to help
Even if you said you want to self invented names here…I just have to tell this.
In my gaming group, i was once was in the situation to name a dwarfen king on the fly…so what went to my head at that time was….Fagodil
That sounds not too bad in german, but if you say it in english…its kind of funny…..now meet…..the FAGODIL
Nobody remembers Tim the Enchanter?
Worst and best name at the same time!!
Unimportant McMannequin, a fellow crew member on our spelljammer campaign (yes we still play Ad&d) best fantasy name ever
I suck with words so I’ll just offer my listening skills. For whatever. You know.
I love you, O, and I’ve always loved your kitties. Don’t think you can’t talk to us directly through the comic with these problems; we love the current storyline, and the fact that you’re finally doing D&D again, but sometimes the best way to deal with your problems is to express them in different ways. In your case, I think making an Arawn memorial comic of sorts would… well, not make you feel -better-, but it’d be something.
::hugs for O:: From one black cat lover to another, I know what it’s like.
In terms of names, the best I encountered was when my friend Sam ran a Conan pencil and paper RPG. A recurring NPC was Uveck the Sour, purveyor of erotic pottery. He had a great voice that went along with it and everything.
be strong O, and always keep Arawn with you in your mind and heart, as he’ll always be with you…
I feel like shit for this, I really grew close to this cat I don’t even know thanks to your webcomic, and to know he’s gonna leave us so young just makes me feel even worse…
at least, O, you managed to let him live forever in your work.
I know how you feel, be strong and if you will decide make him sleep, give him our goodbye with yours as well…
I totally feel for O! I always got crap for naming NPCs. Though one of my most memorable naming moments was when the DM demanded that I finally name my PCs cohort. I looked down and saw a cup from “Zuka Juice” (its like Jamba Juice) and said “Zuka” Everyone thought it was hilarious, then 2 sessions later he failed his save vs a black dragon’s breath weapon, and he truly embraced his name (since the damage total = 4x his HP, we officially pronounced him “Zuka Juice” and brought him to the priest in a sponge….)
And lets face it, many of us are gonna slip the name “Arawn” into our campaigns. I’m writing up an encounter with a royal family, and definitely think Arawn is an excellent name for the mysterious but charismatic head of the royal guard. (I’d make him royalty, but I want Arawn to be involved with the characters, and we all know the characters only look at the NPCs that could kill them, and the Princesses)
I’m amazed that your able to keep up on the comic AND going to work. When my cat Lenard died from leukemia last year (almost to the day), I needed quite a few days to myself. I hope you make it through this as best as possible. And thank you for the comic and sharing such a personal issue with us.
German Fantasy Game: “Das schwarze Auge” has the siliest names. Havena, Thorwal, Bornland etc. They made the universe in 2 hours.
As a GM I had to improvise the name of a NPC-Troll, I looked around a saw an Ice Tea Label named “Trendic” so Trendic it was…
Again, I’m so sorry O. I really hope the vet can do something for him. I do understand what you mean about pets being like family – my dog Gizmo is a solid part of my life. I can’t imagine the past fourteen years without him. Best of luck O and, as usual, keep us updated. We’re here to support you!
O. That is seriously heartbreaking. I really do hope that there is something you can do, some way he can get even a bit better. I love my cat to death, they literally become family and super important. Also, I’d say he’s more than ‘just a cat.’ Those cats are some of my favourite characters in your comic. It’s almost like I know them even though I don’t, through your stories and their appearances.
Keep truckin man. I hope it all turns out well.
In warhammer there is a list of suggested race names, but in order to make the game more fun (at least for me) I used german words as surnames for human npc’s. My players didn’t knew german too well. So they never knew that the pharmacist Hans Wermut was really Hans Wormood. Another possibility may be using Latin names too or mixing them to sound more elvish or dwarvish or whateverish…
My condolence for Arawn…
I think Arwin is far more than a cat, most of us that have been reading comissioned as long as I have know him by name. And, if I dare to say, most of us love the comic strips involving him.
I know that with sick pet it can get rough, just be with Arwin as much as you can. If he won’t get better, atleast he can be with you for now.
Sorry about Arawn O, my dog had a tumor that we extracted like 3 times but it kept coming back, and in the end, even though my dog was still pretty active, he just spend the days walking really weird with the tumor in one of his legs. He was also pretty old but the decision was still pretty hard for the family. But if your friend is in pain, it may be better to relieve him of this suffering. And I also think that Arawn had become a friend and a character for the comic, he will be missed. My condolences to Arawn.
Be strong and let him go… its hard, I know.
Hi O – long time reader, first time commenter.
I am so sorry to hear about your cat Arawn. I definitely understand how you feel. When I was living with my parents, our cat Topper was sick with kidney failure and we had to take him to the vet.. and you know the rest I suppose. He was actually in a better condition than Arawn seems to be in, but we were told that if he worsened he was not going to recover (and he worsened when I was at home the next day).
It was one of the saddest things I have ever done. I understand not wanting to make your loved one suffer but it is horrible either way.
I absolutely hope that Pixie is fine, and if not that nothing will happen for 20 years or so.. all pets eventually go, as humans live longer than most animals, but it shouldn’t be before their time. I’m sorry you had to find out this way.
God bless you, and I pray that you will be helped through this difficult time. I know you may not share my beliefs but I feel you need love anyway
By the way, your comic is interesting, beautifully drawn and entertaining. Just thought I should take the opportunity to say so.
Sorry to hear that about Arawn :/
Hey O,
Sorry to hear about Arawn, I understand the difficult time ahead in deciding what to do next. All I can say is I hope either the disease goes into remission, or if not, that his final days may be comfort and peace.
Crushing to hear about Arawn, O. My sympathies go out to you, as I’m sure he’s an awesome companion.
Sorry to hear that Arwen is so sick… I can only hope he doesn’t suffer to much.
Mis condolencias.
Truly sorry about Arawn. May his next journey be a peaceful one and hoping you and Pixie can find some comfort together. /hugs
You’re doing the right thing.. even though it sucks. Big Hugs
Arawn has led a happy life having a human to take care of him like you do. Lifespan doesn’t really matter, the quality of life does. I am truly sorry for Arawn, he became a family member in your comic no less than humans.
As for fantasy naming – dwarven names always amused me, just addin -in to any simple hard word did the trick. The one that really made me laugh however was Abdel from Baldur’s Gate series, this was the name of the main character, son of Baal from the book. It’s not funny in itself but in the way it was used. Every single thing he did was described as “Abdel took that” “Abdel did that”, I even made a count how many Abdels there are in a page on average. Other children of Baal had silly name variations – Abzel, Abdal, Abend, Azdel, plenty of’em. I though – well, ad Adprnscrn, Adpgup, Adpgdn and Adhome, maybe Adenter too. Adbackspace would also be nice. It seemed to me like someone found their inspiration on a keyboard.
Im trully sad hearing that… well, im speachless, I really hope he gets better, one way or another.
and I hope that you have the strenght to do what it takes to make things better.
Ney.
As a greek, I am used to see greek words and more specifically names being violated in the english-speaking culture, so it woud be hard to impress me. Artemis Entreri for example, a female name. To be male it would need to be Artemios. Nop, another tranny there in the list, O.
Also there is a series with a guy in the british navy, called Hornblower, pretty funny to watch and listen to this name, you can search for it O. All the best for your cats, we have all loved them through your photos and comics and descriptions. I still remember this photo of tthem: http://img213.imageshack.us/i/002idy.jpg/ So nice!
Hm agree… I somewhat laugh my arse off then I see people in D&D playing with characters named after original characters from story… I have no bloody idea whether my names are original… Kotka for example… it’s in Polish, means cat (female). So yea, an animal name. At least it makes sense since she is a shapeshifter. Or I use names from other cultures… if all fails or is taken, I go to D&D name generator.
I hope your cat will get better, even if there is little chance. I had to put my cat to rest last year after he got virus intestinal inflammation. He was an outside cat and old… but I miss him a lot. He was 14 years old, spent more then half of my life with him after all. it’s normal to miss a pet that has lived with you since he was a small kitten.
Hey O – you should like this one.

First off, I really hope Arawn gets better, his appearences in the comic have always made me laugh. I love my cat (Napolean) and would be extremely distraught if he became at all sick. Secondly, I’ve always loved Terry Pratchett’s characters names. Names like Rincewind, Twoflower, Granny Weatherwax, Carrot Ironfoundersson and Mustrum Ridcully are all fine examples of his creativity.
Anytime I see a character named Anya. I think ok, that names lost it’s appeal long ago because a) everyone uses it and b) we all know by now it’s a real name.
and then Arya is terrible because it’s just Anya with a little piece of the n missing.
eragon was a book before they raped it when they made the movie, which like tolken had a damn big index of the dwarvish elvish and magical languages in the back.
