I would like to propose “you got flanked” as the table-top RPGer’s alternative to getting “pwned”. We can also use the term “sneak attack” but then I suppose that one should only be used for the most intense of situations, when “flanked” just doesn’t seem like enough. It’s gotta be really intense, though.

NOTE: I never really got into Counter-Strike (you know… where most people attribute the term “pwned” to have come from?), or any multiplayer experience for that matter. As the moment, my multiplayer gaming is limited to being invaded by Black Phantoms in Demon’s Souls – or as I like to call it: “some moron is trying to ruin my day, and on purpose!”. As you could expect, this doesn’t exactly help me warm up to the whole concept of multiplayer, at all.

Getting a jump on monday are we, hehe. for second i thought u were updating on sunday too and i was like woot woot 4 days a week.
once me and my mates were playing during a hurricane (i’m from Louisiana, and no, not that hurricane) and the power went out just our DM said “everyone roll spot checks.”
funny enough, yes, but every single one of the players, save myself, had turned their dice to nat20 by the time the power came back on.

Okay. This one made me laugh hard out loud. That almost never happens with webcomics (usually I laugh on the inside).
One game I was in we were fighting a basilisk and the DM was having us roll fortitude saves every time we looked him in the eyes. Except we didn’t know that was why he was doing it, we only figured it out after about 5 gratuitous saving throws that he was ruling it like that.

I once had a session where i told the players that they heard a sharp clinking sound in the darkness. They all declared that that they were peering in that direction. Without warning, whipped some coins out of my pocket and threw them at a corner of the room. Startled, they all turned towards the sound. When they looked back i was miming pointing a crossbow at them. I said “that’s what happens, now the other group has surprise on you”.

Nice move! We had a rule that if you go to sleep, so does your PC. And we had one argument once that resulted in a “dodge” object lesson (you had a comic early on about “fireball” that mimiced the experience) but I’ve never seen a DM pull that move. Man! There have been plenty of sessions when the PCs get bored/lazy I wish I would have done that.
pwned comes from warcraft 3, someone mistakenly wrote pwned instead of owned.

Semi on topic: Stay as dead as possible in Demon Souls (with cling ring equipped, it helps) if you don’t want those pesky Black Phantoms invading your game. They can only invade if you are in your corporeal form. Save those Ephemeral Eye stones for later, when you are ready to take them on.
Although, one of the most fun moments I had with the game was a +10 minute long fight with a BP that had some health regen items equipped just like me, and as weapons weren`t doing enough damage to lower those health bars, we got tired of smashing the brains out of each other and healing every minute, and instead we started trying to trick each other to run into enemies and traps around the Shrine of Storms.
That was some good multiplayer.

Actually, the word “pwn,” although a common misspelling, first became popularized in the game Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (the very first Warcraft game, released in 1994). When a player was defeated by a computer, the game was supposed to say “_Player_ has been owned.” Instead, through what is widely believed to be an unintentional typo, the game said “_Player_ has been pwned.”
In conclusion, “pwn” has been around for about 14 years as of this post, and we have a random map designer from Blizzard to thank for its creation.

If you have that opinion of BP’s on Demons Souls, you obviously have never invaded someones game and had a 15 minute battle with one. I have to say, the next time you die on Demons Souls, you should try to invade a persons world, it is highly entertaining.

(BTW, using a huge sword *cough* sword by dragon god *cough* results in very entertaining people flying everywhere, usually off the side of the map
