Minor drift in a mythos is simply a fact of storytelling, epecially anything that has multiple storytellers involved. I have no problem with general drift, because without it you can't create your own spin on something, dive headlong into some particular aspect, or expand the story at all. What I hate is when some lazy ass of a writer or director takes the NAME of something and slaps it onto their creation in order to garner interest and draw in a preexisting audience. It's LAZY AND GREEDY and I can't stand it. Twilight is one of the biggest offenders in recent history, and now Michael Bay goes the Cheap-Ass-NO-GOOD-TALENTLESS-I'M GOING TO MAKE MONEY, F#$% THE STORY-HOLLYWOOD WORTHLESS-CHILDHOOD-RAPING-LAZY-MOTHER@#%@%&^&#@$@$^&@$

I pay about as much mind to the TMNT origin as it deserves - turtles in sewer, get mutated by ooze, raised by a rat to become ninjas. I have never taken it seriously.

If the worst thing about this films so far seems to be that the turtles are aliens, well, bugger me, it must be looking to be fantastic.

ok, so TMNT was part of my childhood, hell.. I still remember when i got a MichaelAngelo action figure and feeling cool about it. But here i wont ramble more about it or Bays options or errors or merits.. Here I am surprised the subject not treated is NINJAS VS. ALIENS... From O i know the mortal and eternal conflict from ninjas vs. pirates. But we are talking about making 2 mortal enemies a race on their own? wont their ninja code would make them want to kill themselves for being aliens? (and I'm well aware of elements like usagi jojimbo, but they were treated in ninja code... untrusty until proved otherwise or samurai.... mwahahahaha). Seriously... NINJA's vs aliens!!!!! O?

O I agree with you. I loved all three Transformers despite changes and multiple other Michael Bay films. I also agree that this is not a simply design change of background change but a character foundation change, an essence of what and who these characters are. I think he could do a really good job at making the movie but changing them into aliens and removing them from New York is similar to changing Superman into some kid from Utah who gets hit by cosmic rays and gains all the Superman abilities. It is taking something established and making it something different while telling everyone it's the same thing. I'll hold judgement on the movie, but I disagree with the change. But it's not my call, and like Star Trek it'll probably be a hit despite the disregard for the source material.

Your note hit it right on the head for me, O. What you come down to, when somebody takes an already established premise, like TMNT or the Matthew Broderick "Godzilla" movie, and begins making radical changes to it is somebody (or an organization or whathaveyou) that is cashing on a NAME while paying little or no heed to what that name represents. THAT is what pisses me off...not the ultimate execution but the unwillingness to go "I like that idea, but let me tweek this that and the other BUT STILL CALL IT THE SAME THING" is what really gets my goat.

Making the Turtles aliens is just like the changes in the 1987 cartoon (adding Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady for example) and people liked that one as well (although I cannot figure out why). Personally, I prefer the 2003 cartoon which is much more faithful to the comic books.

"But we’re not talking about design changes here, we’re talking about taking a defining aspect of a character and throwing it out the window. Being mutants is such a big deal for the Ninja Turtles that it’s PART OF THE FRIGGIN’ TITLE"

Uhm sorry, but you are wrong.
There is a great possibility that the turtles are from another planet where they are small, defenseless yet intelligent normal turtles but then mutate on this very alien planet?
Or they could mutate when they reach our solar system - you know there is another alien mutant with the letters on the chest and yes I say he is a mutant and nothing will change that - in a way even Spiderman in my eyes is a mutant - just not a born one. :P
So they could still be the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" that just mutated on their turtle planet AND where trained on an asteroid in the NINJA system, where everyone is a ninja, which is a must because there is that evil pirate galaxy some where far far away.
It is a little bit hypocritical of you to assume, just you have the right to be angry if you just can explain that very anger with intelligent sentences and bravado.
